I highly recommend it. I've used it multiple times before but this is the first time I've washed my Miata. The white/purple discoloration is 20yrs of road contaminants being drawn out from the paint. It makes claying afterwards soooo much easier.

How does it work? Does it remove surface contaminants?

You wash the car first and then spray this over the car. Something with science and PH balance stuff happens and it pulls out metal bits and crud from the road. It is way more effective than just claying. You still clay after but you can tell how the Iron Out has basically gotten it all out. Fair warning it smells bad haha

AF Iron Out is okay but really not a good idea to let these chemicals dry onto the paint work like that. I used Carpro Iron-X for a couple of years and found Bilt Hamber Korrosol (also smells much better) to be better than most on the market and more cost effective with AutoWheels (wheel cleaner and iron remover in one) being almost no-touch in wheel cleaning.

These products are great in that they only remove burnt brake dust and in no way damage the brakes themselves and also greatly reduces the need for claying or shaving with a shaving block or towel reducing the risk of marring to the paint work.

The only AF product I still use is 'ObliTARate' for tar removal, it really is a great product for removing tar deposits and glue residue.

I do usually get it off as soon as possible. I just stopped this one time for pic. The sun also dried the car faster than I was expecting. I went with Auto Finesse because its also in stock when I look to buy it

Ye', the sun can be a killer. I like to use a 0ppm water filter on warmer days so the water doesn't spot if it dries too quickly and a panel wipe to remove any that may sneak by me before applying the sealant.

I don't know what is available across the pond for car cleaning but I've eleven websites I pick and choose from and even then the availability isn't always there so I like to keep a good stock in.
